Overview
"How long will it take?" is one of the first questions every homeowner asks. Understanding the full timeline, from your first phone call to your first swim, helps set realistic expectations, plan your budget, and avoid frustrating delays.
Phase 1: Design & Planning (4-8 Weeks)
This is the most important phase and shouldn't be rushed. A thorough design process prevents costly changes during construction: Week 1-2: Initial consultation, site visit, soil testing, topographic survey Week 2-4: Concept design, 3D renderings, material selections, budget refinement Week 4-6: Engineering documents, structural calculations, plumbing layouts Week 5-8: Permit applications, HOA approvals, utility locates Learn how to evaluate builders during this phase in our builder selection checklist .
Phase 2: Excavation & Grading (1-2 Weeks)
Once permits are approved, excavation begins. This is the most weather-dependent phase: • Day 1-2: Site preparation, tree protection, erosion control measures • Day 3-7: Primary excavation of swimming zone and regeneration zones • Day 7-10: Fine grading of depth zones, shelf creation, slope refinement • Day 10-14: Soil compaction, drainage installation, subgrade preparation Expect 50-200+ cubic yards of soil to be removed, depending on pond size. Your builder should include soil hauling in their proposal. Ask about this during the proposal comparison process.
Phase 3: Liner & Plumbing (1-2 Weeks)
The waterproofing and mechanical systems are installed: • Underlayment: A minimum 10 oz geotextile fabric above and below the liner protects it from punctures • Liner installation: EPDM, RPE, or bentonite depending on design • Plumbing: Pump installation, pipe routing, skimmer placement, return lines • Electrical: Pump power, lighting conduit, control panel installation
Phase 4: Stonework & Edging (2-3 Weeks)
This is often the longest construction phase and has the biggest visual impact: • Patio and deck construction around the pond • Waterfall or stream construction (if included)
Phase 5: Planting & Filling (1-2 Weeks)
• Filtration gravel installation in regeneration zones • Aquatic plant installation (typically 5-15 species) • Water filling (typically 2-5 days depending on size and water source)
Phase 6: Maturation & Startup (4-8 Weeks)
This is the phase most homeowners underestimate. The biological filtration system needs time to establish: Week 1-2: Water may appear cloudy or greenish as the ecosystem initializes. This is normal Week 2-4: Beneficial bacteria colonies establish on gravel surfaces, water begins clearing Week 4-6: Plants root and begin active filtration, water clarity improves dramatically Week 6-8: Water quality testing confirms safe swimming levels, builder gives the green light
