Natural swimming pool, swim pond, natural pool, pond pool: all the same thing
"Natural swimming pool" (NSP) is the industry's technical term for a chemical-free, biologically filtered pond you swim in, so natural swimming pool, swim pond, natural pool, pond pool and swimming pond all describe one thing. Water kept clear by a planted regeneration zone and the bacteria living in its gravel instead of by chlorine. No chlorine, no liner-and-tile shell, and water that looks like a clear lake rather than a blue rectangle. What we build: natural swim ponds and natural pools, recreational ponds at acre scale for swimming, fishing and wildlife, and conversions that turn an existing chlorine pool into a pond. What we do not build: chlorine, saltwater or mineral-system pools, and no gunite, concrete-shell or fiberglass pools. If a conventional pool is what you want, we are not the right builder for you.
Overview
One of the most common questions about natural swim ponds is: "Won't the water be too cold?" The good news: in Texas and the Southwest, natural ponds are comfortably warm for 5-7 months without any heating. And with the right system, you can extend that to 12 months. Here's how.
Passive Solar Heating
The most cost-effective way to warm your pond is through smart design that maximizes natural heat absorption: Dark liner color: Black or dark brown liners absorb 30-50% more solar heat than light colors Shallow sun shelves: 6-12 inch deep shelves act as solar collectors, warming water before it flows deeper Wind protection: Berms, fencing, or plantings on the north/west sides reduce heat-stealing wind Southern exposure: Orient the largest water surface toward the south for maximum sun exposure These passive techniques add 5-10°F to water temperature at zero ongoing cost.
Solar Panel Heating Systems
Solar thermal panels are the most eco-friendly active heating option: • Operating cost: Near zero (pump electricity only) • Best for: Extending the season 4-8 weeks in spring and fall • Lifespan: 15-20 years with minimal maintenance
Heat Pumps for Natural Ponds
For year-round swimming, an air-source or geothermal heat pump provides reliable, thermostat-controlled heating: • Temperature control: Maintain any target temperature up to 85°F • Operating cost: $50-$150/month (30-50% less than heating a traditional pool) • Best for: Year-round swimming, therapeutic use • Efficiency: 4-6 COP (produces 4-6x more heat energy than electricity consumed) Natural ponds are inherently cheaper to heat because earth-bermed construction provides natural insulation, the ground holds heat that concrete pool shells lose rapidly.
Design Tips for Warmer Water
Depth matters: Deeper ponds (7-8 ft) hold heat longer than shallow ones. Thermal mass works in your favor Floating solar covers: Reduce heat loss by 50-70% overnight: especially valuable in shoulder seasons Night circulation: Run pumps on a timer to avoid mixing warm surface water with cool bottom water at night
