Natural swimming pool, swim pond, natural pool, pond pool: all the same thing
"Natural swimming pool" (NSP) is the industry's technical term for a chemical-free, biologically filtered pond you swim in, so natural swimming pool, swim pond, natural pool, pond pool and swimming pond all describe one thing. Water kept clear by a planted regeneration zone and the bacteria living in its gravel instead of by chlorine. No chlorine, no liner-and-tile shell, and water that looks like a clear lake rather than a blue rectangle. What we build: natural swim ponds and natural pools, recreational ponds at acre scale for swimming, fishing and wildlife, and conversions that turn an existing chlorine pool into a pond. What we do not build: chlorine, saltwater or mineral-system pools, and no gunite, concrete-shell or fiberglass pools. If a conventional pool is what you want, we are not the right builder for you.
Overview
One of the most common questions we hear is: "What does a natural swimming pool cost per square foot?" It's a smart way to compare options. And the answer might surprise you. While the upfront cost per square foot is comparable to a traditional pool, the long-term cost per square foot is dramatically lower thanks to minimal chemical and energy expenses.
Average Cost Per Square Foot
In 2026, the average natural swim pond costs $50-$150 per square foot for a complete, professionally built installation. This includes: Premium features like natural stone edging, waterfalls, underwater lighting, and swim platforms add $15-$40/sq ft to the base price.
Factors That Affect Price Per Square Foot
Depth: Deeper ponds require more excavation. Each additional foot of depth adds roughly 15-25% to the per-sq-ft cost Soil conditions: Rocky or clay-heavy soil increases excavation costs by $5-$15/sq ft Liner type: EPDM rubber liners are the standard ($3-$5/sq ft). Concrete or fiberglass hybrid designs cost $15-$30/sq ft more Filtration complexity: Simple gravel/plant filtration is cheapest. Adding UV sterilizers or advanced biofilters adds $5-$10/sq ft Hardscaping: Natural stone edging, flagstone patios, and retaining walls can add $15-$40/sq ft Location: Texas projects are generally 10-20% less expensive than Northeast or West Coast builds due to lower labor and material costs
Natural Pool vs Traditional Pool Cost Per Square Foot
The key takeaway: while upfront costs are similar, natural ponds cost 30-40% less over a decade thanks to near-zero chemical and dramatically lower energy costs. Learn more in our pond vs pool cost comparison .
Long-Term Savings Per Square Foot
Natural swim ponds deliver savings that compound over time: • No chlorine or chemicals: Saves $600-$1,200/year • Lower energy costs: Natural ponds use 50-70% less electricity: saves $400-$800/year • No resurfacing: Gunite pools need acid washing ($500-$800) and resurfacing ($8,000-$15,000 every 10-15 years) • Property value boost: Natural water features add 5-15% to property value vs 0-7% for traditional pools Read our full property value study for data on how swim ponds affect home prices.
